The people to for sure go camping with are Jake and the Ervins -- Tyler, Maggie, and their cute son August. We've been trying to do as much as we can outside while the weather is still nice, and rumor had it that this was going to be the last nice weekend for a while... and so far, they have been right! It's been in the 30s in the mornings and 50s in the afternoons. Maybe we'll get some real snow this year!
We went camping for one night on Friday after we were all done with school, and we were pretty excited to get out of the house and into the canyon! We had just driven the Alpine Loop the weekend before and we were honestly itching to go camping, so we were lucky that Tyler thought about us. He originally wanted to do this 3 mile hike and camp at Silver Lake, but we decided (unanimously.. cough cough) that we wouldn't be able to bring enough gear to camp successfully or comfortably up there, so we decided to go somewhere closer to a parking lot. Tyler searched out a good spot for us, marked our territory with his tent, and it was set! And it really was the perfect spot -- secluded, but wide open enough for 4 tents, and a perfect spot for a fire.
Jake and I packed up his truck with so much stuff we were borrowing from the Mauldins (that we have now added to our registry.. ha!) and stopped by Smith's to get some food. We got up there around 4:30 on Friday, and trekking up all our gear was definitely a haul. Luckily it wasn't THAT far from the car to the campsite, but it was just enough to make you lose your breath when you were carrying a heavy load. Jake was planning on preparing kebabs, so we bought bell peppers, zucchini, chicken, shrimp, tomatoes, and onions... and they were soooo good.
Christian and his wife Nicole brought s'more stuff plus STARBURSTS to roast which was amazing. We all sat by the campfire and joked and talked, and the boys (including Bob, who is so funny) reminisced on all their childhood memories. It was fun to listen to. We all also tried to get August's attention. He is the best little kid! Easy going and fun to camp with, except for when he walks by the creek and we all freak a little.
In the morning, Tyler made blueberry pancakes and a huge thing of eggs and sausage goodness. He brought syrup, apples, bananas... he was really thinking in preparing for this trip! It was awesome to wake up, hearing Tyler had already made the fire come back to life and was preparing breakfast... I would definitely argue that is the life! The rest of the morning, we brought our stuff back to the car and then sat around the fire and talked some more... we also tried out Bob and Tyler's hammocks, and decided we must have one!
I'm glad we were able to go camping before the snow comes! The fall colors are unreal in Provo Canyon. We're not quite ready for the snow yet, but at least we've checked one more thing off our nonexistent bucket list! It's nice to have friends that make camping fun.
